Electrical Oil Services operates several locations, each specialising in different areas. Among other things, Hamburg is the centre of excellence for transformer refilling, using both new insulating oil and recycled, technically new insulating oil. In addition, numerous other services related to transformers are offered. We spoke to Peter Klausen, Field Service Manager Germany, about his work, the special features of the Hamburg site and future developments.
Transformer refilling is an essential part of the Electrical Oil Services (EOS®) service portfolio. At the same time, the company offers numerous other services: laboratory analyses, insulating oil treatment and regeneration, insulating oil replacement, and the repair and maintenance of transformers.
‘Whether it's VDE analysis, maintenance, repair, oil filling or installation – we offer our customers a complete service for their transformers from a single source.’
Mr Klausen, please tell us a little about yourself and your career path to Electrical Oil Services.
I have been with EOS since 1 June 2020. I started as a sales representative in technical sales and field service. At the end of 2024, I took on the position of Field Service Manager Germany.
My team and I are responsible for the complete preparation and follow-up of assignments, customer and project management, from preparing quotations to visiting customers and construction sites.
This combination of technology, responsibility and customer contact makes the job very varied.
What specific tasks and services does the EOS site in Hamburg perform? What else is there besides transformer refilling?
It's true, one of our main areas of focus is transformer refilling. This applies to both small transformers, with a few hundred kilos of oil, and large transformers, with over 100 tonnes of oil.
But we do much more than that: in addition to laboratory services, this includes oil treatment, complete insulating oil changes, refilling of transformers – also under vacuum – and, if necessary, the repair and overhaul of transformers. In recent years, we have also added the construction or partial construction of up to 400 MVA transformers. When refilling, we use either new insulating oil or our own product, EOS Premium X, a recycled insulating oil in new oil quality that is certified according to IEC standards, depending on the customer's requirements.
In short: whether it's VDE analysis, maintenance, repair, oil filling or construction – we offer our customers a complete service for their transformers from a single source.
How does the Hamburg site differ from other Electrical Oil Services locations?
In Duisburg, the focus is on accepting used insulating oil and processing it into base oils. In Stanlow, Great Britain, most of the used insulating oil is used for our recycling products EOS® Premium and EOS® Premium X.
Hamburg, on the other hand, is strongly focused on services ‘related to transformers’. We visit our customers on site, carry out refilling, oil changes or repairs, and accompany the transformer from installation to safe operation. This means that the locations complement each other perfectly – Duisburg and Stanlow take care of the insulating oil, while Hamburg handles the complete transformer service.
In addition, Hamburg is also home to the in-house EOS® laboratory for insulating oils. This is where the insulating oil samples are analysed and, if necessary, appropriate recommendations for action are made. It is important to us to be able to offer a complete service here, from VDE analysis to gas in oil, furfural, etc., or PCB analysis.
The close cooperation between the laboratory and the service department makes it possible to directly coordinate the condition of the insulating oil and any service measures. This results in clear advantages for our customers: tailor-made and coordinated solutions.
How do your customers experience working with you and your team?
We often hear that our customers greatly appreciate our flexibility in terms of deadlines, as well as our reliability and the scope of our services. Well, for us, it goes without saying that we try to accommodate our customers' deadline requests as much as possible and find pragmatic solutions for everything.
Many companies are unaware of the full range of services we offer as EOS® – and are surprised at how broad our portfolio is.
Looking ahead, how do you see the development of the Hamburg site?
Grid stability and an extended service life for transformers remain key issues. Interest and demand for our range of services and accompanying services will therefore continue to grow in the coming years.
An important additional aspect is the recycling of insulating oils – our EOS® Closed Loop model. Used transformer oil can be recycled very well, so that it can achieve the same quality as new insulating oil. By returning it to the cycle, we are not only contributing to sustainability, but also opening up new opportunities for our customers.
What opportunities does the EOS® Closed Loop model, i.e. the circular economy of insulating oils, offer your customers?
The collection of used and pre-tested insulating oil is a cornerstone of how we ensure the quality of our recycled insulating oils. We take care of both the logistics and on-site collection. We are a reliable partner for our customers, professionally taking back used insulating oil and then returning it to the circular economy in recycled form.
This closed loop and our all-round service are the reasons why we are convinced that Electrical Oil Services will continue to grow overall.
Thank you very much for talking to us, Mr Klausen!
